Finding the motivation to continue in eating disorder/disordered eating recovery can be so hard sometimes. When a client is struggling to find motivation to improve their relationship with food, we often times make a list of benefits of continuing the (super hard) work together. If you’re struggling with the motivation to keep doing the work, or you haven’t yet committed to working with a Dietitian, here are some (potential) motivators for you.
- You could enjoy your time out with friends & family
- You could spend less time looking at menus & nutrition facts and more time enjoying the company of the ones you love most.
- You could gain more energy
- Eating adequately and consistently over time will help you feel more energized. Food is literally energy for your body. You need to eat enough of it to feel well.
- You could do less math! (if math isn’t your thing)
- Tired of adding up points, calories, macros, etc.? You don’t have to micromanage your food and nutrition. There is a way of fueling your body in a healthful way that doesn’t involve tracking and doing math.
- Movement could feel easier and be a source of enjoyment vs a source of stress
- Having big fitness goals requires an increased demand for energy (food) and nutrients. Fueling you body well throughout the whole day and week will help give you more energy during movement and allow you to meet your amazing goals.
- Vacations and traveling can be enjoyed again
- Stressing about changes in your nutrition and movement habits can be super stressful when you have an eating disorder. It is possible to have flexibility when traveling and to eat meals just because they taste good. P.S.- all foods have nutritional value 🙂
- You could achieve more goals
- Feeding your body adequately frees up more brain space for other things that are important to you. Like starting a business, trying out a new sport, or getting your college degree.
- You could gain more hobbies
- What do you wish you could do but can’t because of your unhealthy food/movement relationship?
- You could think about food less often
- Food deprivation leads to food obsession. It’s normal to think about food 24/7 when your body is not getting what it needs.
- Celebrations could feel more joyful
- Birthday parties, holidays-you name it, feel much easier and joyful when you have an awesome relationship with food.
- It could save your life
- Eating disorders can be life-threatening. If you are struggling, now is the perfect time to reach out for help.
